چکیده

Simulation provides an opportunity for a trainee to practice skills in an interactive and reactive virtual environment. We present a technique for social and cultural leader training through simulation based on a combination of interactive synthetic agents and intelligent scenario direction and adaptation. Social simulation through synthetic characters provides an engaging and believable experience for the trainee. In addition, the trainee is exposed to a sequence of relevant learning situations where the trainee can practice problem-solving under particular conditions. An Automated Scenario Director provides high-level guidance to semi-autonomous character agents to coerce the trainee’s experience to conform to a given scenario. When the trainee performs actions in the virtual world that cause the simulation state to deviate from the scenario, the Automated Scenario Director adapts the scenario to resolve any unexpected inconsistencies, thereby preserving the trainee’s perception of self control while still retaining any relevant learning situations.

Simulating the Emergence of Social Relationship Networks in Groups of Believable Agents: The X-BARIM Model

Believable agents are intelligent agents designed to emulate characteristics such as personality, emotions and relatioships in order to exhibit an ilusion of life to human observers. Hence, designers should not only cater for the individual behaviour, but also consider their social interactions. In this light, this paper describes a model for interaction and relationships in groups of believabl...

BASIC: A Believable Adaptable Socially Intelligent Character for Social Presence

Drawing inspiration from social science and psychology, a computational model of a personality model for a Believable, Adaptable, Socially Intelligent Character (BASIC) has been designed, implemented and tested to drive chimpanzees in a multi-agents scenario. The BASIC model can be customized to create different personalities that are able to trigger empathic responses in human spectators, othe...

Modeling agents with a theory of mind: Theory-theory versus simulation theory

Virtual training systems with intelligent agents provide an effective means to train people for complex, dynamic tasks like crisis management or firefighting. For successful training, intelligent virtual agents should be able to show believable behavior, adapt their behavior to the trainee’s performance and give useful explanations about their behavior. Agents can provide more believable behavi...

Creating a World for Socio-Cultural Agents

Creating agents that are capable of emulating similar sociocultural dynamics to those found in human interaction remains as one of the hardest challenges of artificial intelligence. This problem becomes particularly important when considering embodied agents that are meant to interact with humans in a believable and empathic manner. In this article, we introduce a conceptual model for socio-cul...
